I have an older "Nikon ED AF NIKKOR 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 D" lens. There is no label to indicate if it is a DX or FX. I have been searching all morning for the answer. The nomenclature on the lens is exactly as above.

Thanks in advance.

That's funny because I have the same exact lens that I have had for about 10 years, I think it is an FX lens.

While the D lens like the OP has isn't of particularly good quality (I have one) it's made in Japan. The other G lens and the current VR version I think made in China.

Thanks to everyone. I had a feeling it might be FX. My newer VR model does not say DX either so assume it is fx too.

Any lens that does NOT say "DX", is an FX or full frame type lens. Nikon only designates the smaller diameter DX F-mount lenses as every othe F-mount lens will cover a 35mm film frame, or FX sensor. All F-mount lenses will physically mount on all Nikon F-mount lenses, as well as Fuji and Kodak DSLR cameras that utilized the F-mount.

Thanks. That is very enlightening. Useful info for the future.

I'm going out on a limb here and say it's an FX. Maybe someone mentioned that already. :D

As MT said, if it doesn't say DX, then it's FX.

It is an FX lens but will, as all other Nikon lenses, work on both FX and DX. A DX lens will work on an FX camera but the image will either vignette or the camera will automatically go to "DX " mode or cropped. I have that 70-300 lens and it is an okay lens.. not great but adequate. Lightroom does NOT have the lens profile for that lens but does have the newer 70-300 (the one with image stablization) lens profile which does not work well. However, given use on a tripod, or good stable holding, and watching your ISO as the lens is pretty slow, the lens will work well.

This lens is autofocus (AF) and relies on the motor in the camera body to drive the mechanicals. The "D" designation after the aperture range indicates that the lens will communicate distance information to an attached speedlight for more accurate lighting. This lens was made for film or APS-C sensors before Nikon started designating DX and FX on lenses. Consider it to be FX.
