O.K., That's about what I expected; more of a moral issue rather than a clear legal one. I asked the chairman of the show; she saw no problem as far as rules are concerned.
For those of you who took shots of my pix: I'm 83 years old and have been using a camera for 60 years; large press camera, 35 mm. and several other consumer boxes-- I have been an editor and a photographer and have had several pix published ( including one today in our local paper... So I think I know my way around a camera.
THANKS to all who responded.
Alyn

Can I claim "ownership" and enter them in a county fair photo contest? Is there a problem with copyrights? I "doctored" them quite a bit, so they are not precisely the same.
THANK YOU.

Maybe yes, maybe no, is the answer as to the law. If you want to be a scholar, look up the cases involving the scumbag "appropriation artist" known as "Prince" who makes a very good living by stealing other people's work and defacing it.

Financially, you are in no position to withstand threats from the owner of the stolen stuff.

Ethically, you'd be a thief.

As to the competition, the rules probably forbid this type of thievery and the judges likely don't favor it.

Alyn,

You might want to ask the Chairman of the show, the Director of the County Fair, how their legal department thinks about such use.

There must be no moral compass any more for such a question to be even asked. No it is not alright to take another's work and claim it as your own no matter how you "doctor" it up.

Both the moral and legal issues become muddied as you modify the original image more and more. There have been huge numbers of court cases revolving around "appropriation artists" and how much modification is necessary to avoid copyright liability. As with many legal matters it is not cut-and-dried.

There's a series of interesting cases involving the thief known as "Prince." Those are the most interesting and important recent cases.

Another bunch of cases involved the thief Jeff Koons. One of the most interesting was the "man with puppies" case. (Rogers v. Koons)

Let say you can fool everyone, do you think you can win anything with an image copy from TV?

Here is my question to you. Suppose I went to YOUR site, took your images, doctored them up, claimed them as mine and used them for my purposes. Would that be right?

This is not about legality, it's about ethics and morality.

ARE WE BEING PLAYED OR WHAT?

Alyn did not need us to tell him to read the U.S. Copyright Law, he should certainly able to do that on his own. What a waste of time for all of us.

The serial copyright infringer "Prince" has been taking shots off Instagram, putting a few words on them, then making large "art" prints and selling them through a gallery to rich idiots who pay $90,000 or so.
