I get calls like this every couple of weeks. "I don't have a computer" is my response, and I hang up.

Don't follow anyone's directions on any phone call that you did not initiate!

I just received a strange phone call from (Supposedly) a Microsoft rep/agent.
A gentleman with a distinct Indian accent called a little while ago. He told me that my computer was infected with malware and/or viruses and he was calling from MS to help me. He told me to press the Windows key and type something like eventxxx at the prompt. I told him that I was very leery about typing anything in and running any program at someone who purportedly represents Microsoft.
He then told me that he knew my unique ID number and told me to write it down. He the told me to run MSCONFIG from the prompt and type in ASSOC which would match the number he gave me beforehand and prove he was legit. While he was talking to me I looked at the reports from Malwarebytes and Norton and they showed nothing.
I then told him that I very reluctant to do anything he suggested via a "phone call from Microsoft."
I said that unless I received an official email from MS, I wasn't going to run any programs from someone who made a personal call to me.
He said goodbye and hung up.
I then decided to back check the number he called me from and the app said it was an invalid number.
Has anything similar happened to any of you?
What are your thoughts?
I just received a strange phone call from (Suppose... (show quote)

This happened to me a year ago. I fell for it the first time and in the end they offered me protection for $300, $400, $500. I refused it and for the next year I got 18 calls asking me to do the same thing they asked you to do. They finally stopped calling me a few months ago. I learned a lesson from that and you did the right thing.

I told him not to worry as I was on my way home with a new computer. Actually I was on my way home with a bottle of Jack

Ask them how long Macs have been running windows. That ends the call pretty quickly.

In the past I've had these people ring me back after I've ended a call with some very abusive language (I'm sure it would have reduced Mrs. N. to tears) so I'm glad I took it.

Thankfully we have a no. blocking phone now.

Many times. Just want to sell you something. This will not be your last call. Just hang up.

All are right it is a scam. I have a new tactic for robo calls like that. I answer and say "to speak to the customer please press one now" drives them crazy and most push 1. Then I just chuckle and disconnect.....

I had received repetitive calls from this so called "Microsoft Agent" I was really getting sick and tired receiving calls from this Indian accented person. His manner was very convincing and extremely persistent! Being wise to this scam,I jerked him around for 35 minutes by asking stupid questions and pretending to go to my computer and leading him to believe I was following his directions.I was allowing him to think he had a fish on the line. Being retired and a vindictive mischievous jokester I took the time and enjoyed frustrating this scam artist. He finally hung up.I have not received any more calls. This is a active scam and I wonder how many victims he has sucked in.

Be careful about what is called a fishing scam also. That is a very official looking email where someone trys to get you to give them any kind of personal information.

As told before, all reputable sources will not surprise you and ask for any personal information. Always, verify the source.

Basically the same thing happened to me. Someone with an Indian accent called and said he was from Microsoft and that my computer had been sending messages to Microsoft that it was infected with viruses and Trojans. My nose immediately smelled cow dung, so I simply turned my phone off.

When my caller ID shows an unfamiliar number, especially 800 or Florida, I pick up and hang up. I get lots of calls from FL wanting me to take a "free"vacation there.

I got one the other day - the phone number was (123) 456-7890. He said they were calling about my computer. I asked which one. He said the one you're using. Me: I have 5 computers, which one? Him: The one you use most often. Me: I'm on every one every day, which one? At which time I hung up on him. I may try that NoMoRobo if I can find it. Might also eliminate the campaign calls - but would also stop the calls from my credit card company telling me they've noticed a strange charge on my card. Had that happen once or twice, too.

A couple of times, and then I called Microsoft to report it.
