I shall be shooting night scenes of the bays, reflections, and skyscrapers in October when I visit Hong Kong. Most of my shooting will be from areas that are not too brightly lit. I plan to use either my Nikon 18-200mm or my 18-140mm lenses. My question: Should I leave off the lens hoods for night shooting? Thanking you in advance.

It wouldn't hurt to leave it on or off.

I leave the lens hood on for night photography for 2 reasons. 1 to avoid stray light that might hit the lens and 2 for protection. My tripod has had a mishap a few times.

I'm certainly no expert but can't see any compelling reason to remove it, It would seem it would keep out glare from any nearby bright lights. I keep mine on for extra protection of the lens and never take it off.

I did some night shooting in St. Petersburg, Fla. this winter, and lights not in the viewfinder had noticeable and detrimental effect on the pics. I would leave it on.

Thanks to all of you for your responses. I shall take your advice and leave the hoods on.

Excellent decision - as previously suggested, always leave it on for obvious protection & stray light reasons.

Best Regards,
Tom

Odd question. Why would you want to leave the hood off? The risk of stray light on the lens or dropping the thing remain the same night or day.
