This shot really puzzles me. If you notice the tree on the left, in the foreground, is in relatively decent focus, and half dome, in the background is in good focus. The tree on the right, however, which is in between the two is way out of focus. Any explanations?

I can't really tell from the small images here - try checkin the box for "save original." When I zoom in, the focus looks faily consistent between the elements.

I have re-posted the photo and stored the original for closer examination.

Wind? Looks like the right side tree is exposed to all sides from wind. Hard to tell on the left tree.

That's what I'm thinking - it looks like motion blur. It's also a long-needle - not so the one on the left.

I do not see what camera this is, there is no data.

According to the pattern I see this looks like a digital zoom. Which means that it extrapolate pixels out of the longest optical zoom. Needles are not exactly the type of thing this logarithm is good at, resulting in blotchy results.

Clues? The patches on the ground the trees.

You are exceeding the limitations of your camera.

Left tree

Right tree
Right tree...

i'd go with wind as well but to me nothing in this image looks particularly sharp and that includes the mountain

Does the wind make the ground shake and discolors everything as well?

This is a know problem of digital pixels. To create a new one the camera software checks what is a 'reasonable' approximation, using surrounding data and create a pixel then it checks again, and again. In the end this leads to to an error being propagated and multiplied.

The final result a blotchy picture that looks relatively ok when small but with distinctive discolorations and patches when magnified 1:1 or more. This is why I posted the 3 samples, to shows that the problem is in all the darker area. It also exists in lighter areas but is harder to see.

This is a p&S with a digital zoom, not a DSRL or compact that does not use digital anything.

The draw back of being suckered into features that are software gimmicks.

I'm voting with the limey dog on this one. If the camera is a P&S, it's digital zoom garbage. If it's a DSLR, it's wind. If it's a painting, it's probably the DT's...
