OK, this one will be a learner for myself and hopefully others also. I have never really done anything too intensive with blurs so I thought that it would make a neat Challenge

My killer question:

You pan a train, the train is clear but the background is blurred. OK. You then shoot the train, it is blurred but the background is clear. Would the blurred train be motion? Are blurs and motions in the same family?

Just an opinion, but I thinnk it is how the blur is used. In your first shot - no motion involved at the restaurant, but there is some blur that emphasizes the dining tables and avoids the clutter in the background. The blurry train, either way, would visually imply motion. I am sure someone will correct me. Btt that is how I think of it.

We went out on a night shoot last night with the St. Thomas Club. I worked on several things and tried zooming while the shutter was open. Got a few (not great, but will show an example of blur). Also some b/w.

Photographed the horse as it went by...then #2 I panned, giving the blurred background.

I've seen folks get the blur effect by zooming (in or out) on stationary objects. I guess there the motion is the hand/lens
in motion. Also many moons ago, we used to put petrolium jelly on the lens or filter to create a blur effect.

In this case as you describe it the movement of the subject or the camera is what creates the blur. You can classify it as blur however there are many ways to blur something that is not moving. Depth of field, zooming in or out on a subject, and the use of filters to name a few. We used the rapper of of a pack of cigarettes years ago. Hope that helps clear it up or at least makes a little more sense of it.

I decided to go out at dusk tonight and see what some movement would do to my roses. The last one I took along the interstate (I was not on the interstate).
