We Yanks & Canucks have a website that allows us to fairly quickly ID most North American insects (http://bugguide.net/node/view/6/bgimage ). I know of no similar reference website for the UK, so we can offer very little corroboration.

Actually the weather has been awful here. Been very wet with a constant cold wind blowing heavy rainstorms through. Between the rain the sun comes through and it gets very warm and out come the insects.
Thanks for looking and for commenting, really appreciated.

Yes, there are lots of sites but no single reliable one. Problem is the variations in colours in photographs both online and in print just make hard to be certain. It is very interesting though.

Nice study. Wing venation, antennae and abdomen shape match Rhagionidae, snipe flies. A book that shows wing venation is often most helpful. Don't know what would work 'over there', but some general entomology texts sometimes found cheap in used book stores may help. There are so many bugs that species ID is often impossible, so family ID is very good, and gives a lot of general info about members even if you don't find the exact one.
