I spotted this fly a couple of days ago. Not a house fly and I don't think it is a fruit fly or a hover fly.

May be a soldier fly, family Stratiomyidae. I get big, black ones in my compost -- been told they are a sign of a healthy compost pile. #1 shows the wings well, and #2 the antennae.
