Cheap extension tube photos

A good reason not to buy a cheap $60.00 set of auto extension tubes for your Nikon.

Pictured is one of the three flanges that hold everything onto the camera. They are 2mm wide, by 1mm thick. The actual offset width that attaches to the camera flange is only 1.5mm.
Incredibly, the attachment surface on the tube body for the three plastic flanges is only about .5mm. With one of them 2.5cm long and the other two 2cm, that doesn’t make for a very strong grip.
A little bit of flex with more than a short lens attached? It’s those little tabs starting to break off. When they have broken off enough, everything drops off the camera body. I was fortunate in that they didn’t have far to drop and the Micro-Nikkor 105mm lens was not to my knowledge damaged. Extension tubes were of the Opteka brand.
