This is very interesting to me, I just uploaded a series that includes the Western Golden Male Carpenter bee.

I have several hundred shots, largely of bee butts. I suspect it would help if I tried to get them when they are gathering pollen rather than around their hive. I have a long way to go before my shots have the quality of yours. You have given me a standard to shoot for.

they are difficult, especially because of their reflectiveness, yours look like your using available light or your flash is on low, I use flash and handhold only, have a few that are better then these, and I have shot plenty of the north end of southbound critters myself. Thats the beauty of digital, you can shoot till you fill up your card if you have to
