today is absolutely gorgeous outside ,the wife and I have been working in the yard, and I was constantly asking see any bugs yet? and the answer would be NO!! But low and behold we have two compost barrels and thought to myself, gee maybe something lurks inside one of them, well I found this fly inside one, had to stick my head inside to get the darn photo as it would no come and pose for me, so my angle is not great and the photo probably is not either BUT I finally got to shoot one here's a look. First photo is the original, second one is cropped.
Nikon D3100 at ISO 500, Nikkor 105G leans, 1/200 sec at f/9, Nikon SB-700speedlight with softbox.
Oh and a side note, man did it stink in that barrel :) :) maybe next one I find well be in a barrel of beer

And a mighty nice fly you have too. With practice your photos will be sharper. The lighting and composition look good. As was told to me by our impeccable leader, Douglass, practice, practice, practice.

Glad you finally got to shoot something (alive)

I'm sure you can see the drawbacks of shooting in direct sunlight :| Having said that, I have been deleting hundreds of shots from Sunday that I tried to do in direct sun along with the flash. I had very little chance of shooting from any other direction to block the sun at the time.

oh yes for sure, but need to have the composters in the sun to keep them heated so that the materials break down. I was just excited to have this one quick photo op. thanks for the comment

Tom, in the warmer weather last year I found jumpers hanging around my compost cover, probably because the compost attracts flies for them to eat. I found the jumpers were so small I didn't notice them until they moved, so keep a close watch. In the morning they tend to be slower while waiting for the sun to warm them.
