What's a '90° Center Column'?
Marion
You can move/adjust the center column to swivel from its normal vertical orientation so that it is parallel to the ground or 90 degrees to the normal vertical orientation. It is handy so you can get the camera physically close to the ground or orient the camera so the camera lens points straight down to the ground.
Search the model number and then look at images. There will probably be a photo of the tripod in this orientation.

Yer welcome. By the way, Raleigh's price on his tripod is a very fair one. I own it and the prior version and highly recommend it. It is rock sold.

Would this be too big for a travel tripod? Especially if hiking is involved.
The center column can be moved from a vertical position to a horizontal. The tripod is sold.

Thanks for the call. I was sorry to tell you it was sold
The seller is able to add "sold" in the title line. It helps UHH users

To answer your question - I have hiked with it but is does weigh about 6-7+ pounds after you add a head. When I hiked with it, I was specifically carrying it with photography as the primary purpose of the hike. I have used it to hold either a medium format film camera or my DSLR when I want to put it in creeks and/or get super low to the ground. I would not consider it a travel tripod.
I use a smaller, lighter, carbon fiber tripod when i just need a tripod to hold my Pentax K-3 DLSR with my 20-40mm Pentax lens.
