I shoot flowers with a 60D and EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM.
Would adding an Extension Tube EF 12 II (or 25 II) magnify the image if added to the macro lens?
Adding an extension tube will take away stops. Is adding an extension tube a bad idea for other reasons?
Thanks for your thoughts on this.

Using tubes, there is always the possibility of attracting debris to the sensor area - there is also the possibility of reducing contrast from internal light reflecting off the walls of the tube. And yes, you will gain magnification by the ability to move closer.

imagemeister is right but they've been doing it for a hundred years and it works fine.

Adding an extension tube also makes it more difficult to use the lens for non-macro shots. With the tube in place you won't be able to focus at infinity. The longer the tube, the more fixed in macro range you will be...until you remove the tube. But swapping tube in and out brings in imagemeister's concern about debris getting into the body.

FAQ: Extension Tubes vs Bellows vs Tele-Extenders vs Add-on "Close-Up" lenses
http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-26496-1.html

A Canon EF 12 II Extension Tube ($84) adds 12-mm between camera & lens.
A Canon EF 25 II Extension Tube ($145) adds 25-mm between camera & lens.
Both are quite expensive. I would suggest that you consider a standard set of Kenko Auto-Tubes (12-mm, 20-mm, & 36-mm) for $139 at B&H, which will give you increased magnification options. 12 + 20 + 36 with a 100-mm macro lens will be quite close to 2:1 magnification at MFD.

Thanks for your response. Do the electronics in Canon lenses still work with the Kenko extenders?
As far as that goes, do you know if the electronics in Canon lenses work with the Canon brand extenders?

while we're on the subject, do extension tubes or teleconverters work with the MP-E 65?

Yes.

The MP-E 65 has "built-in" extenion tubes, which elongate considerably when zooming from 1:1 to 5:1.
Why would you want to add extra length, or extra optics to the fine MPE-E 65 macro lens?

you haven't lived until you make a play for the prettiest filly in the corral just to prove you can do it.

Mounting a TC in reverse in front of the MP-E65 ( don't remember which strength TC) allows it to focus to infinity ! ( or thereabouts). I think there is a thread here on UHH demonstrating this .
