I can't find my original link and I can't remember who was asking about round snow thinking that it was sleet. Anyway, at that time, I said that I would post a photo of round snow when I got one. Today, I got one. It's not the traditional looking snowflake (6 points) or any of the 35 types.
It seems to me that, way back I was told that this type of snow is common when it is lake enhanced (or ocean or any large body of water). I could be wrong, though.

Your round snow flake reminds me of the year I spent on Shemya Island at the end of the Aleutian Islands while I was in the Air Force. The wind which was constant and very very strong rolled the snow flakes into round balls. Never saw regular snow all the time I was there. We had plenty of this type of snow with snow drifts of 15 to 20 feet common. Can't say I miss Shemya or would like to go back there.
The locals in the California San Bernardino Mountains call it Corn Snow. Rare up there, once in three years.
