Nice picture, I like the composition. But the whole picture looks a little on the cool side to be, too blue. Maybe you could warm it up just a little?

I agree. I like the minimalist look in this shot. The white balance is off. There are also some spots in the sky in the upper left quadrant. There are probably others that aren't showing up in this shot. These look like dust on the sensor. If you shoot a pastel monochromatic you will probably find more. In any case, it looks like you're due for a sensor cleaning.

Im sure you saw a photo opportunity here but its message has not come across in this photo. It may be because the white balance needs attention and some further detail extracting from the shot. That will exacerbate the dust spot problem so have your clone brush at the ready

I really like this Dave. There is great detail and textures in the sand, I love the plant in the foreground, and the line of the slope leading my eye through the frame. I like the contrast of the desert sand against the mountains. I wish it was a panorama shot though, because i want to see the rest of the desert to the right. It feels a little cut off.

First-off, may I thank you for your forward thanks - the trail of thank-you's normally deemed necessary when one posts is something that sometimes puts me off posting! I shall adopt your approach in future and highly recommend it to others.
Yes, your white balance is off - the blue made me feel I was looking at snow rather than sand. Otherwise I like the composition - although with this type of view there is always a wish that it could be wider, this can sometimes be helped by the choice of crop aspect ratio.
If you use Lightroom there's a very handy way of finding dust spots, and removing them is simplicity itself.

Hi, Dave,
Looks, to me (best guess...) to be a mid-to-late morning shot at White Sands in late autumn or early winter with a slightly hazy sun, and, as such, the white balance appears to be appropriate. You could, of course, warm it up a bit to please all who wish desert images to be on the warm side, but I can believe that it is, actually, accurate as captured.
Composition is fine and I like that you used a low enough perspective such that the yucca seed heads broke the skyline.

White Sands, if you have the good fortune to avoid lots of other visitors, can provide the opportunity to "work" most scenes to a fare-thee-well for a varity of in-camera compositions, and, as I try to remember, a few "step-back" shots to permit some unanticipated crops in pp.

Best regards,

Dave in SD

Before assuming that the sensor is what is dirty, check the back of your lens. I had a similar problem and had lots of advice to clean the sensor. The sensor may need cleaning, but I found debris on the back of the lens that was easier and safer to remove and the problem was solved.

The spots I see on your image aren't only on the left, but the right sky as well. The spots aren't sharp which I would think means they are not on the sensor. I may be wrong, but I would think that dust on the sensor would be sharp since they are so close to where the image is recorded.

Other critique, I would add a little more contrast and color correct.

Wait...what? It's not snow?

Wow, my first comment was going to be that your snow needed to be white, not blue. I guess that works for sand as well.

I usually try not to be too harsh, but in my opinion, there just isn't a subject in this image. Maybe if one of the plants was more prominent, or the mountains were made to really stand out, but to me it all kind of runs together.

As always, I will finish this with, these are only my opinions, and they are worth exactly what you paid me for them, so if you love it, print and cherish it.
