I own Canon DSLR's (5dMkII and 7d). I bought the Lumix because sometimes I want a small camera and it was half price at B&H. For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to format the card on this camera. Can it be done in camera??? I have read the owners manual to no avail. Can anyone help? Thanking you in advance.

I don't have that Lumix, but there are a few in the family.

You definitely can format your card in the camera.

Try page 68 of the advanced manual. If you don't have one, try this: http://service.us.panasonic.com/OPERMANPDF/DMCFZ200_ADV.PDF

Panasonic has a pattern of making two owners manuals. One is very small and simple. The other is complete, long and advanced. They give them to you on a disk that comes with the camera. If you have diskless computers, you get them from Panasonic support via the internet.

Perfect. Thanks. I searched for "format the card" and it is under "delete pictures". I guess simpler words for a simpler camera.

Find the wench mode and 8 pages shows up. Format is on Page 7 at the bottom. You will have to go to menu to find wrench. Hope this helps.

Actually I believe that you can scroll either way on the menus and there is (from memory) only 1-2 things on the last page of the "wrench" menu. so go to the menu and scroll up two pages

I shouldn't write it, but looking for the "wench" mode may be something from my dreams!

It only appears on the "R" rated models of the camera. You ought to see selections on the "X" rated model.

I have an FZ200. Here's the drill:

1.) Activate the rear LCD panel
2.) Press the menu button. (place selector dial on top of camera to "P."
3.) Scroll down to the "tools" symbol
4.) press the right side of the selector ring around the menu/select button
5.) Scroll down until the number "7" becomes highlighted in the upper right corner of the screen.
6.) "Format" appears next to the bottom of the selections.
7.) Select "format", and push OK, and follow the prompts.

Sounds complicated, but it's actually quick and easy.

I have the FZ200. My suggestions: Go to youtube and watch Graham Houghton's very complete and well explained videos on the FZ200. He also produced a terrific manual that is free for downloading at his website or blogsite. I did that and had FedEx/Kinko's spiral bind it for me for about $6-7. Or you could buy it from Amazon all printed and bound for about $35. His manual is far better, IMO, than Panasonic's. Certainly more understandable. I especially appreciate this camera's 2.8 constant Aperture. I use it in low light settings such as concerts and sports.

I must be dense, but it took me quite some time to realize what was happening.
1. Once you reach the P and menu screen, press the ring to the left, scroll to the wrench.
2. When there press ring to the right.

Here's the tricky part that was tripping me up, the Volume setting is NOT the last option.
3. Continue to press down until you've reached the number 7 in the upper right corner of the screen
4. press down until you've reached Format
5. while on Format press right on the ring
6. When it asked if you want to delete the info on the card
select yes.

Turn the camera off, then back on. If that nasty blurb stating you won't be able to record is gone, you've done the formatting correctly.

I thought "wench mode" was for female photographers.

When I think "wench" I immediately think of a busty barmaid at a renaissance festival.

Many thanks for the detailed explanation, however on my FZ200 after "format" there is only the choice to Delete photos, not format. With an empty card it does nothing.
I recall some earlier cameras, e.g. Canon, having a simple choice of Reformat when or after deleting All pictures.
