Hi Everyone:
Is there someone that can walk me through on how to select and set up through the menu the back button focus?
Thanks to all.

Simple. Press the Menu button, go to Custom Settings Menu (Should have a pencil icon). Select "f" for controls and then f5 "Assign AE-L/AF-L", scroll down to AF-ON and press the OK button.

I found it to be a huge pain in the butt but to be completely honest, I didn't give it much of a chance either and the camera was also set to AF-C which kind of screwed things up too.

Someone will be along shortly but I have neither camera nor manual handy.

You could try YouTube or a Google search if you want to get it done sooner.

That was fast! Thanks Erik.

Look at this video from Tony Northrup. Once you get it setup in the menu, here's why it's good. I've been doing it and am never going back to having the focus in the shutter button.

It just happens that someone asked yesterday how to set it up on the D7000, which I have. It's the same on the D7100.

I knew it wasn't that hard but couldn't remember the steps. I may have to give it another shot though since the AF-C has since been turned off. It was one of those, too many things were changed at once without checking out the pros and cons of each setting.

It was driving me nuts trying to figure out why the focus box would jump all over the place after it had focused on where it was originally supposed to and then someone here turned my Duh light on.

It's actually best if the camera is left in AF-C. After you set up the button,-- when you take a picture and press and release the button the focus will lock just as if the camera was in AF-S. However if you press and keep your finger on the button, the focus will continually update as in AF-C, which would be good for a moving subject.

If I remember correctly, the subjects were all stationary but the focus box kept moving all over the place. At the time i was trying for a particular part of a flower. Obviously there was operator error going on. I 'll figure it out eventually...
