My friend received this from Life Science.
That is a Dodo, they have been extinct for over 300 years. A few sets of bones and fragments in museums, drawings and paintings, exhibition models made for museums and movies etc. are all there is today.

Thanks St3 for all these sites. Looks like I have some reading to catch up on.
Short story - the bird was killed of many years ago
Long story - it was actually a pretty inventive bird
Should be a fun read! S-
We killed them all.
We've made a lot of short sighted mistakes in our human history, we still are. Thylacines, passenger pigeons, Galapagos tortoises, Tuna (a matter of time).
There was a stuffed Dodo in the Pittsburgh Museum I often looked at. I have often wondered since if there was enough intact DNA in it they could use to someday resurrect the species, it only died when it met hungry human sailors who found it easy prey. just as the tortoises, stored on their backs alive in the ships to provide fresh meat months after capture.
Mean bastards we are. Now they are killing off Rhino's for their horns, and bears for their paws, and gorillas to use their heads and hands, elephants for their tusks. There will be nothing left when we are through.
