Check memory card. My camera is set so it will not shoot if no card so pull it and replace it. Also make sure the door for the memory card is closed all the way or the camera will not turn on.

Thanks to all that offered suggestions. Here's what I finally discovered and it is right along the lines of Jim D's response. There is a small switch being engaged when the battery door is closed. I'm using a battery grip so you have to remove the door. The grip is supposed to engage the switch when it is installed and it has done this successfully for the past 6 months or so that I've used it. All of a sudden it no longer does. If I remove the grip and manually press the switch in the camera works.
I don't have the battery door with me as I had not intended to remove the grip while in Alaska. So, I don't know if replacing the battery grip with the original door will solve the problem.
So, in the spirit of full disclosure, the battery grip is a third party knock off that cost a fraction of what an OEM grip would have cost. If that turns out to be the problem, my bad.
Thanks again for all that offered suggestions.
btw - I found surprisingly little on Google or the Canon website that was of any use.

Glad you found it.
If I can't afford to buy the oem I'd rather do without
That makes me want to consider some of them "parts or repair" Canons on eBay with the "won't turn on" problem. Hmmmmm
I actually had a problem with my T3I. I would shooting then would take a break and power would be lost. Took to where I bought it from. They replaced it. Never did find out what the problem was.
Having a similar problem:
Bought t3i off Digital rev.com and although the camera initially worked for a short period it stopped working pretty quick- ive bought a new battery and charger but the camera will show no signs of life whatsoever... ive never attached a battery grip or any other accessories.
Any help or advice hwatsoever would be much appreciated.
Thanks!
First, if you have a meter check to see if the battery has a charge. Next, there are two small switches. One on the door for the battery and one on the door for the memory card. Check both of them.
After that my only recommendation would be to return the camera.

I don't if what was wrong with my T3i/600D but it wasn't turning on. Every time I clicked the shutter release, heard a beep but no response, neither would display turn on. No matter what buttons I press, I always heard the beep but no display, no activity. Changed the battery, reinserted the memory card, changed the lens, but nothing worked. Then I did what someone here suggested: took out the battery and pressed the shutter release button for 30 seconds (and I think I heard a a discharge voice), put the battery back, and it was working fine :) Thank you, guys! I can go to sleep now..peacefully!
