One way switch of your choice?
You can install as many versions of PSE on the same computer as you like, as long as you have the hard drive space and meet the other specs. Right now I have 9, 11 and 12 on my laptop and 9 and 12 on the desktop. No problems at all.

Sure, I have 2,7,9,11, and 12 but the catalogs quickly get out of date so effectively I only have 12

Ah, gotcha! I don't use the catalogue at all, so have no idea about keeping that up.

When I got PSE 7, I already had a filing system for my digital photos in place, and as I was browsing the internet for info to learn PSE7, I kept finding messages from people having problems with importing their catalogues.
So, I'm still using: Year, month, event, in Windows Explorer.
Just recently, I proved to my son that I can find a given picture in Explorer as fast as, if not faster than he can in the Catalogue.

Having the three version right at my fingertips... uh... laptop, I find it very convenient to be able to look up something about the program for others that have a question.
Except for the Magic Extractor in PSE11, I now use PSE12 exclusively.

I have been using PSE since vs 3. But I, too, don't jump at buying every vs. Adobe issues a new vs just about once a year. So, I created my own rule: I buy every other vs. I'm on the "odd" cycle with vs11, so I'll most likely get vs13. An exception would be if reports indicate the next version (even numbered vs in my case) has significantly improved/many new features. So far, that has not happened.

This is my way of saving a few bucks.

That's exactly how I've been handling it! I like 11 and I am still getting accustomed to it.

After watching a nearly half hour YouTube video on a comparison of 11 vs 12, the verdict was if you have 11 it's not worth the upgrade unless you need the smart move tool, or have some teaching reason for having the latest release.
