Welcome.

To answer your question, I'll ask another; what TYPE of photography do you need it for?

That will determine what your initial camera body should be capable of.

Once you know what you plan to do, then it's time for some SERIOUS research.

There are a number of professional cameras available ranging in price from about $2000 all the way up to $50,000.

Then there is the question of lenses for your particular application.

So you see, you really DO need to narrow things down just a little bit.

GOOD LUCK!!!

You can get quility pictures with all the new DSLR's and many of the bridge and mirrorless cameras. If your customers are going to want big prints you may think full frame. The top of the line pro cameras are made to be rugged and take a beating and for the most part the mid point cameras take just as good as pictures. Of course you need to get lenses that are up to the task. But since most of your work is going to be outside you will not need the f/2.8s that cost so much. - Dave

While good pro cameras can take better pictures than an average camera, you will fine its NOT the camera that makes an outstanding professional photographer...

What makes a real pro is YOU !!

A good photographer can produce award winning pictures with - lets say - a Panasonic ZS7 - or a Canon SX40....

A camera is only as good as the photographer is trained...

Very wise words and ones to be taken notice of.

Start with a Nikon D100. It will give you good photos and is gentle to the newcomer. It doesn't cost much -- $75 on craiglist type sites to $150 from KEH or Adorama (with warranty). It makes a great second camera when you move up.

If your daughter is already in the business, then just get her a gift certificate for Adorama, B&H, etc., since you could go very wrong purchasing equipment for her. If this is really for yourself as in the original question - don't plan on going in to professional photography until you are very capable with whatever equipment you can afford. A camera such as a Canon T3i is reasonably priced and will allow you to potentially do good work and can be expanded with better lenses, better flashes, etc., as time goes by. Staying with the major brand names allows a greater variety of non-brand options designed for the camera.

You can be a professional with any camera that you use. It all depends on you, the photographer. Too many amateur photographers think that purchasing an expensive camera will help make them a professional. If you can not take quality pictures with what you have, you will never make lit.

When the consumer hires a professional photographer that's what the consumer should be getting.

These are all very good answers that I have read to your question. Which brand, Canon or Nikon, now depends on large part on what you or your daughter is now shooting with, and what type of lenses you, or she already has. I wouldn't give up one system for the other, but keep what I have and add to it. For instance if money is an issue at the beginning, and it normally is, I would opt for let's say a used Nikon D2Xs, or D3, if I could not afford the new D4. Still professional cameras, and very capable of taking excellent pictures in the right hands. Same goes for some of the used Canon cameras that have now been upgraded, also still very capable cameras for an aspiring pro to use. Later on, when you can afford the D4, these cameras will make great back up cameras and still have a lot of life left in them. Just my 2 cents worth.

A lot of success stories arise from people simply jumping in and ignoring a lot of the naysaying. Get a quick idea, then go for it. Sometimes it works, sometimes not, but it's always an adventure.

A lot of professionals are simply very good amateurs that get paid for their work. Well, like me! :-)

Do you have a budget? that info would be helpful. Many pros use "2nd line cameras" as back ups. Some have mentioned the Nikon D4 or the Canon 1Dx with pro level lenses a package will set you back something over 10 grand. A Nikon D7100 or a Canon 7D would be about 1/2 that amount. That having been said the old saying comes to mind- A camera takes the picture but the photographer makes the picture.

Agree....visit a good camera store and rent several "professional" cameras to, first, determine if you are ready for one; if you are ready, then you will have the info you need to make a choice.
