Dear fellow UHH members:

Yesterday I had an abdominal operation. I came home last night. I warned the doctor that I am easily sedated. I think he took me seriously, and gave me something to speed me up after the sleepy-time anesthetic wore off. I slept only two hours last night. I missed a day of UHH because of the operation, so I logged in at 3 A.M. this morning.

I have been on UHH for 16 hours today and someone told me I am currently the number one user. My goodness. This is probably a one-time event.

As long as I still have a little energy, I'll tell you about my relationship with art and photography. My father was a writer and photo-journalist. He was ship's correspondent on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific in WWII, and later he had a long newspaper editing, writing and public relations career. My brother is a jeweler who was in many juried shows and who has pieces in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution. He is also a photographer. My sister is a professional photographer who has had museum shows and she has taught photography at the high school and college level for over 25 years.

I started drawing as soon as I could hold a pencil. In fifth and sixth grade I had the great good luck to have an art teacher as our regular teacher. She devoted much class time to artistic pursuits. Our class often produced works that were published in the city newspaper. In high school I had more good fortune to be able to take art classes for two hours every day. Later, I attended college with a dual major in art and biological science. My professional life did not involve art for several years, but eventually I started working for a company that produced real estate newspapers for real estate companies from all over the world. We took bits of information and random snapshot photos mailed in to us and turned them into polished, good looking real property marketing materials with good photos and well designed pages. After some years there, I found a better job as an art director with a regional coffee company and I ran the art/advertising part of that business for several years.

My daughter holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree, specializing in studio arts/printmaking. She was another one who started drawing as soon as she could stand at the coffee table with a pencil in her hand. I took her to art museums on a regular basis all through her youth. We love the world of art. It is important to us. A passion. Art..and food. :P

I am writing this because I have been a UHH participant for just a short time. I have made quite a few posts and offered some opinions, but I have not mentioned anything about my background before now. Some people may have wondered why I may seem to have a firm conviction from time to time. Now you know.

For me, the marriage of photography and art is a happy one that is every day so well expressed by the very talented members who participate here. There are so many people here who are interested in bettering their skills and/or sharing what they know. I think this forum is an enjoyable way to communicate in a positive, happy, useful way with other people who share the love for photography, fellowship and art.

I am glad to have found UHH and I hope my contributions are useful to others. I certainly enjoy communicating with all of you.

Always your friendly,
Heirloom Tomato

Thank you for that wonderful biography. I found it very interesting.

I went for several weeks unable to sleep and sleeping badly due to medical reasons. I spent a lot of time looking at the photos and reading the threads. The UHH got me thru the night. Now that the doctor had straightened out my problems I have been sleeping like a rock.

Get well soon and sleep well, also!!!

Best introduction ever, Heirloom. Your art background in art gives you a real leg up in photography. Even bad pics can be compelling if well composed. I'm going to start looking for your posts as I'm thinking I can learn something from you. Hope you got a good nights sleep and that you will have a speedy recovery. ;)

Thanks for letting us know "who" you are. I too love the combination of art and photography and sometimes fool around making art out of photos. Many people would not like some of these, but I do. I did one yesterday and my wife will have to look at it for several days. I've always been a tomato grower, but Heirlooms do not grow well where I live. Get well, and let us hear more from you!! Thanks.
