ViewNX2 Installation Error

I downloaded the latest version, 2.8.1, of ViewNX, both 32 and 64-bit. When I try to install either, I get this error message. Any ideas? I've downloaded it several times into my Downloads folder.

EDIT: More info. I currently have one version listed as being installed. When I try to install the new version, it wants to uninstall the old one. That's where the error message comes in. The strange part is that I can't find ViewNX anywhere on my computer, although it is listed in the "All Programs" list.

EDIT: I just deleted the ViewNX from the All Programs list. Apparently, the computer was looking on the J: drive, whatever that's supposed to be, to uninstall. I still get the same error message, though.

Jerry, if you are certain you want to install this new version, go to the Control Panel, Programs and Features. In the resulting list, select ViewNX and click the uninstall option at the top of the page.

That will (should) remove the old version from your machine. Shut down and restart then try your installation again.

I get the impression from the error message above that it may not like the 'space' between the X and the 2, rendering it as "an invalid character". But spaces in paths has been supported for a while, so I'm thinking it's the software that doesn't like something, as opposed to Windows.

It would be helpful if, after uninstalling the old version, you could run a Registry Cleaner to remove old entries in the registry. CCleaner is a good one. I've used it for a long time, and it's free.

Hope some of this helps. :-(

I never thought of going through the Control Panel. Still no good, though. It thinks the program is installed on drive J. That's why I'm getting the "invalid path" message. It is not on the computer, but the computer thinks it was installed last August. It won't install the new version without removing the old version.

Editing the Registry might work, but I don't want to get into that.

A letter as high as J is likely to represent an external drive. Try attaching an external drive to see if that makes a difference.

First off I would check 'Computer' for a drive 'J'. If there is, navigate to the path for ViewNX and run the uninstaller from there if it exists. If you do have a drive 'J' and the above steps didn't work, let us know. If you do not have a drive 'J' see below.

You may have to edit the registry to get the install to take. Sure there is risk if you mess up but there is risk in cleaning your dslr sensor, canoeing, riding a bike, etc.. I say take the risk, it's what makes life fun!

It won't hurt to look. Run regedit and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Nikon\ViewNX 2

With ViewNX 2 highlighted (clicked) on the left you will see the entries on the right. Take a screenshot and post it please.

I have a feeling the install dir will be J, this may be the case for other programs listed under the Nikon folder.

Also if it were my computer acting up, I would modify the registry, but I am comfortable doing so. I can speculate on what you might see and list steps below, but a screenshot would be extremely helpful.

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Nikon\ViewNX 2
Click the ViewNX 2 folder on the left, click file > export, save to desktop and name it viewnx2backup. (I would also export the Nikon parent folder just in case) You can always right click this file on the desktop and select 'Merge' revert the ViewNX2 key back to its original state.
On the right you could try changing the install dir and/or application paths from 'J' to 'C'. Exit the registry and try the install again. (I doubt a reboot will be needed for the install to see the change).

If you do that I see one of 2 things happening.
1. The install works.
2. You get an error that is something along the lines of 'Old version not installed'.

If the latter is the case I would delete the whole 'ViewNX 2' key and try again.

If that doesn't work, merge the the backup and say "well $h!t, I tried"

When I tried to access the J: location, it asked me to put a disc in the drive. It seems to be looking for ViewNX on an external connection.

It doesn't seem like the program is even installed. I have the same 'MCA2' folder but I also have a ViewNX folder under the Nikon folder. I take it you did not find a 'J' drive?

Also in regedit you can try searching for 'viewnx' and looking at the entries on the right for a filepath with a 'J' root directory.

I have googled the 'Error 1324' and the results seem to indicate an invalid character such as \ / : * ? "" < > | either in a filename in the install or user folder and/or registry entry. It suspect it could also give the same error for looking for a drive 'J' that does not exist.

I'm assuming you are running Windows 7. Open up 'Computer' and on the top right search bar search for 'viewnx' (don't worry about the '2').
Look for those invalid characters on any filenames. You can also post a screenshot and I'll help identify an issue.

Also in regedit you can try searching for 'viewnx'. Look at the entries on the right for a filepath with a 'J' root directory. There could also be those invalid characters too but that will be tricky to find. Lot's of searching there.
BTW you can press F3 to 'find next' to make the search faster.

Here is what mine looks like when ViewNX is installed.

Perhaps a program like CCleaner can find and fix any registry problems (and others issues) which will allow you to complete the install.

Also have you ever received files from a Mac? There are some characters that Mac can use in a filename that windows cant. Just a long shot.

Using the Search feature, I found more.

Have you gotten it fixed yet?

Still haven't heard if you have a 'J' drive in 'Computer' or searched 'Computer' for 'viewnx'.

I don't see anything wrong with those registry entries.

You can see above what Search showed me about ViewNX. Yes, I do have a J drive. I'm not going to do any more with this. It's not worth the effort. It's not like I need ViewNX, but I thought I'd install it a give it a try. Thanks for your help.
