As for Adobe Cloud, I don't see where it is needed by someone like me, a non-professional. From what I have read its main use is for storage for those using LR and/or PSE. Is this correct?

The name "Creative Cloud' is mostly a mis-nomer.
What it really is, is a subscription model for the Adobe family of software.
You can get the entire suite for $49.99/mo, which includes almost 40 different editing/production products.
As an incidental part of this, there is 20GB of 'cloud' storage for individual subscribers.

There are also lower level subscriptions available, including the newest one of $9.99/mo US for LightRoom and PhotoShop.
IF you qualify for that (you need to own a registered copy of of at least CS3), then Adobe has committed to keeping that rate as long as you don't let the subscription lapse.

The way it works, is that you download a copy of the software to your computer. It's fully functional, but it periodically looks for updates and re-authorizations through the internet. To continue use, it must re-authorize at least every 90 days.

It has NO connection with PSE.

I bought LR4 just weeks before LR5 came out. I watched a video (Kelby??) that listed the 10 top upgrades from4 to 5. These were deffinately not worth an upgrade, in my eyes. Many of the changes had to do with the "Map", "book", and "slideshow". For example, you can now add short videos along with still photos inot the slideshow. I did upgrade from PSE9 to PSE11 at the same time. I did notice several changes in that upgrade, but still use LR4 for 90% of my work.

I haven't upgraded yet. I was waiting for at least the first round of bug fixes.
The perspective correction, radial filter and the (much) improved spot removal tool make it very desirable for me. Maybe I'll get the upgrade this weekend.

Well if you are into trying out new PP software take a look at the public beta of Perfect Photo Suite 8. Perfect Photo Suite has a lot of presets, does layers, does masking, does resizing, has a portrait module, and the new eraser tool in version 8 rivals and in my limited testing is better than Photoshops Content Aware Fill tools.

Their masking tool is easy to learn and use compared to Photoshop's but Photoshop still has the advantage for really tough masking jobs. But PPS can do the hair thing and the sky showing through the trees thing fairly easily.

You can test all their tools in the public beta of PPS8 and download the trial version of PPS7 to see all the presets that are available.

I sound like a sales rep for them but I'm not. But if they keep adding great features like the new eraser tool I may end up dropping my Photoshop CC subscription.

MtmMan,
I am still using LR 4.4 and PSE 10 and like both programs. I have been seriously considering upgrading to LR 5. As often as Adobe keeps upgrading their programs it is easy to spend a couple of hundred dollars every year!
If you were me would you upgrade just one program or both? What advantages are there in upgrading to PSE 12 over version 10?
As for Adobe Cloud, I don't see where it is needed by someone like me, a non-professional. From what I have read its main use is for storage for those using LR and/or PSE. There may be advantages to those that use Photoshop but sense I am not a student I can't afford to go there, and LR with PSE seems to do anything I want to do. Is this correct?

Elements 11 was a Big revision, try to buy it on sale now that 12 is out or wait until Costco sells 12 for the Hollidays. The cloud give you off site storage-you could do that with 2 external drives and a place away from home to keep one/rotate them once a week after you run your backup software.

Is the 30 day trial still available for version 11? As for buying from Costco, I don't even know if there is one in my area. I don't have a need for places like them sense it is just me and my lady friend Stella, a chocolate lab. She is excellent company and rarely argues with me, LOL!
