I have a new camera now that takes photos in RAW format so I'm looking for a RAW editor. I presently have Elements 10 that doesn't offer much for editing RAW and therefore will be looking at what else is available.

As Black Friday approaches I'll be looking to upgrade my Elements 10 or begin with LR 5. Any recommendations out there?

Now that I have elements 11, I am wondering what I need Lightroom for. I'm a novice though, so take it for what it's worth.

Nightski,

Yes, elements will do most of what LR will do and then some. The advantage of LR is it easier, once you learn it. It took me a while to learn it but now prefer LR for most of my PP. I use to be a die hard PSE man until LR 4 came out and I took the time to learn to use it properly.

I now recommend downloading the 30 day trial and working with it to learn the basics. I think you will like it, I do.

Oh, I have both Jim. I have Lightroom 5.2 and elements 11. I agree. Lightroom is much easier to learn, but elements has more functionality. I subscribed to Lynda.com for $25 per month until I learn elements. Lynda.com offers tons of software training courses for that price. But, now, I am wondering, if I will ever use Lightroom once I have Elements 11 down.

That is going to be your choice. I didn't think I would till I took the time to learn LR, and now use it as my primary editor and only use PSE 10 for finish work if needed. I normally shoot in raw and have found LR's ACR to be much better and quicker than PSE. When I get out to shoot it is not unusual for me to take 1,000 photos. I mainly shoot wildlife so take 8 fps and they add up quick! Thank God for the delete key! LOL! But even after deleting 90 or 95% of my photos it still leaves a lot to go thru and LR is much quicker for me.

Try to take the time to learn it and you will see what I mean. Maybe if I was only working with 5 or 10 photos I might have stayed with PSE but that is not normally the case for me, I usually am working with 50 to 100 shots so LR has, and does, work well for me.

I think it is the learning curve that scares many away. It is quite different than PSE but it is worth taking the time to learn it, especially sense the ACR is so much better. Once you learn it you will see how much quicker it is. The ACR is comparable to the one Adobe uses in their CS software, but one heck of a lot less expensive!

You should call Adobe for their new rate. There is a new subscription photoshop and lightroom for $10/per month. You have to subscribe before the new year.

Unless they changed the program recently you have to have previously owned a version of Photoshop CS3 or newer to qualify for the $9/mo rate. If not then it's $20/mo.

Take a look at Raw Therapee. It's free and has some pretty good features including tomemapping to get a HDR effect.

I went with Lightroom 5 this time around. I have Elements 11. Lightroom is specifically made for photographers. You can also use your Elements version after PP in LR.

You should never need Photoshop - CS6.

Adobe has stated they will keep a Lightroom version for consumers.. (not cloud only). It's also very affordable over Photoshop.. unless you are a professional graphics artist.

I'm a teacher and I got a different price. That might make a difference to you. What I did was subscribe to Photoshop CC. (creative Cloud). You get the latest version of all the Adobe programs. So, now I have LR5 and CS6. I have found that I can do the exposure and color manipulation I want to in LR5 and then if I need to do something else, I can simply load my image directly into Photoshop and go to town. I don't know Photoshop that well, so I am still learning. It works for me. Downside is that it is a monthly subscription fee ($19.99 in my case normal price is more like $49.00). Don't know if this helps you, but it is something to think about.

The best deal around is if you have a version of Photoshop CS3 or later you get the deal for $9.95 per month.

I have Lightroom and Photoshop. (Well, I also have Elements but only use it to instruct my wife who uses it.) I would never buy Photoshop at their standard prices. Elements is almost as good for what I do.

But like most I use Lightroom over 80% of the time and Photoshop 10%. My other 10% is with Topaz.

Thanks for the reply SS, my only familiarization with LR is from following tutorials on line, but it seems to do precisely what I'm looking for. Once I get a good detailed RAW file that I'm satisfied with, I can handle the rest in JPG editors.

Lightroom has substantial editing capability from Photoshop, but it does not have layers capability. You should be able to download a 30 day demo and try it out, but it'll take a few weeks to learn it too, unless you have a book on how to set it up and use it.

You can layer and stitch in Elements 11. I can only imagine that 12 has even more goodies in it.
