This morning while I was working in my flower beds, I inadvertently came upon you basking in the morning sun, causing me to come close to a heart attack. I thought we had an agreement. You stay away while I am working in the flower beds. Let's be honest here...I don't like you. Luckily for you I didn't have my shovel nearby or you would have been beheaded. I know, I know...you are harmless, eat bugs that I don't like, blah, blah, blah. So I have a plan...lets be silent and INVISIBLE partners in this war on bugs. That way I won't have a heart attack and you get to keep your head. I'm not asking for much.
Thank- you.
That's why I don't have a garden.

LOL!!! Even if I had camera in hand, there's no way a clear pic could be had from me running one way and the snake slithering another!!!!

I do not understand people's dislike of snakes. Venomous yes, but beneficial or non venomous--why the dislike?

Cause they scare the crap out of me and I don't know why.

It's because most of us can't tell the good from the bad. And I for one don't want to wait until it is too late for me. So I avoid them at every opportunity.

You can usually tell by the shape of their heads and eyes
ROUND headed SNAKE ARE HARMLESS (* EXCEPT FOR coral snake.
RED TOUCHES YELLOW< KILL A FELLOW, Red touches BLACK, Poison LACK.)
American Vipers have triangular heads, and pits between the eye and nostril.
Most snakes will leave you alone when warned of your approach. Most snakes are not aggressive towards humans ( consider the scale so to speak)
IF you encounter a snake ASSUME it is venomous and back way. It will leave you alone
Oh and do not try to stare down a snake, they don't have eyelids YOU WILL BLINK First.
First bite is the worst, wash with hot soapy water, rinse with warm water and dress with peroxide.
With 160 bites under my belt, mostly boas and python, one copperhead (hot bite) and pygmy rattler ( dry bite), I can tell you the first bite is the worst ( unless it is a venomous snake, that is another matter.
If you have NO USE for snakes, or fear them, you are in great company, 80% of people have a fear or loathing of snakes, mostly unjustified.

No, many snakes are very beneficial--eating moles, mice. They do not start their day with the thought of "I am going to hunt for a human being to bite".
And many are very beautiful in color. Just don't pet them against the grain of their scales. I have been told that is the equivalent of nails on a chalkboard to them.
