I'm unsure if anyone can help, but since we all use computers, I thought it was worth a shot.

I'm a member of a group called FaithTech. A neighbor friend of mine coordinates the local group and invited me as a photographer to join. While it's just getting off the ground, I've found it to be an interesting mix of people. Many are coders in both the back and the front of the house and trust me, that is a whole other world! Some are employed, others aren't. This economy has really hit hard in their IT world. The group is to network, support, and share new knowledge. They also have labs on another day where members can work together on projects.

We all have different needs and have different things to offer. Tonight, over pizza, one member who is a writer/photographer wants to purchase a Mac and asked if we had suggestions as to the best place to purchase and what to look for. Obviously, money is tight. We all made some suggestions as she's a PC person. We recommended going to the Genius Bar and Apple to check for refurbished.

Does anyone here know of any other places that we might suggest?

Thanks!

Barb

MacSales.com has used Macs for very good prices.

Anyone with comments, good or bad, about Lumix cameras?

I've been using a G85 since 2018, and recently got a Panasonic Lumix G Vario 100-300mm f/4-5.6 II POWER O.I.S. Lens. It gives the equivalent of a 200-600mm in 35mm format. Very lightweight and fast, and the battery life is surprisingly good. I'm able to shoot AutoISO up to 12,800, which is nutz, but Topaz Photo AI removes all the noise and sharpens amazingly well. Here's an example at 1/200, f/5.6, ISO-2500, 300 (600)mm, processed through camera raw, Photoshop, and Topaz Photo AI.

You can get this at MicroCenter in Overland:

I've had this software for a few months now, and occasionally it just refuses to open. I found no helpful advise on the Topaz forums, so I figured it out myself.

Normally uninstalling/reinstalling will fix issues like that on most software. Not this one.

So I uninstalled it using the free Revo Uninstaller. It removes any trace of the program after the basic uninstall finishes.

Then I reinstalled and signed in, and it runs perfectly again.
I have no idea why it stopped working, but that's how I fixed it.

Can anyone tell me the best way of how to get get pictures (JPEG's) out of my wife's I-11 Cell Phone and on to my Windows PC's Hard Drive?

There's got to be a way to easily get them off and on to my HD.
I would really appreciate it.

Thanks.

Get a SanDisk iExpand drive. One end is an Apple Lightning connector, and the other a USB-a connector. Use the iExpand App on the phone to back up any content to the drive. Then plug the USB end into your computer and transfer the content to your desided location. Great way to transfer large video content, doesn't take very long.

I am looking to add to my gear. I am looking for a camera for basketball, great on noise. I have Nikon gear so I was looking for comments and suggestions on maybe a Nikon D750 or D5. The 500 just isn't getting it done.

These are existing light, monopod shots ran through DxO PhotoLab 5 Deep Prime Noise Reduction.

Here's a couple from a recent shoot at an indoor concert hall environment.

First one:
D500 / afs nikkor 70-300 / 4.5-5.6.
Manual: 1/500th / 5.6 Auto-ISO = 12800

Second:
D500 / afs nikkor 70-300 / 4.5-5.6.
Manual: 1/500th / 5.6 Auto-ISO = 16000

Third:
The first image saved out of Camera Raw with 0 noise reduction.

Merry Christmas!

Back on line. All data safe All applications gone have to reinstall all. Lightroom being a pain in the a.. trying the use the backup files. Oh well at least I'm back on line. Anybody know how to increase the size of the pointer in Windows 10?

A very visible cursor: Start>Settings>Devices>Mouse>Additional Mouse Options

That brings up the Mouse Properties from Control Panel. Click the Pointers tab,

and choose: Windows Inverted (extra large). It's color is inverted and it's transparent.

It's black against a white background, and white against black. You can't lose it!!

It seems there is a tendency for over the counter drugs to make the print on their bottles smaller and smaller! Half the pills you get off the shelf can't be read even with +3 reading glasses! One solution I have come up with is to shoot the label with my i-phone and then enlarge the photo using my fingers to expand the shot. By having my phone with me while shopping, it has saved me some exasperation on several occasions. Maybe they make the print so small because they don't want people to know their meds come from China!

iPhone's have a great Magnifier built in, but it's not activated by default. To enable it, go to Settings>Accessibility> and turn the Magnifier option to "On". That's it. From then on, all you need do is triple-click the home button to get the handiest darn magnifier you ever saw. You can use the slider to zoom, or pinch and spread to zoom. Hit the lightning bolt to turn on the light. Great for menus in a dark restaurant. On the newer iPhones, I believe you triple-click the side button for the magnifier. Happy Independence Day!

I also have Paul C Buff DigiBee DB800 strobes (two of them). I like that they're compact and have a powerful LED modeling lamp. The recycle time is 1.5 seconds for 100%. It's 0.5 seconds for 50%. Firing your D850 at 7 fps is a little fast. I've always just had my camera in single shot mode and waiting a couple of seconds between shots.

Did you get their model 7UR umbrella reflector? It spreads out the light 180 degrees to better fill umbrellas with light. I use one when I'm using umbrellas.

Yep, I have a few of them. I use them with my Einsteins, too.

Nice portrait work. Lovely young girl, too. (Is it ok to say that?) You must be proud.

Darn right it's OK to say that. Nothing at all wrong with appreciating beauty, and expressing it.
She's quite a wonderful person.

Those are really good. You used short lighting which I understand is better than broad lighting when photographing women. A portrait photographer who does critiques at our camera club jokingly says "Don't use broad lighting on broads". I don't think that's a hard and fast rule though. I have made portraits of women - some are short lighting and some are broad lighting.

Thank you! It was a rather simple setup. A Digibee 800 on a boom with a 36" white shoot-thru umbrella, a 36" white reflector on the opposite side, triggered with Cybersync transmitter. The Digibee was set to about -3.00, so recycle time was pretty quick. I was able to occasionally fire my D850 @ 7 fps and had very few dark frames. She was in a good mood and very cooperative. It felt good to be shooting again.
