The Canadian Pacific 4-6-4 Hudson, the Imperial is on a trek from Canada to Mexico with a stop in Kansas City at Union Station. Their website stated that it could be tracked with an icon along the route shown on their map. Never saw the Icon. Then I read somewhere that it could not be tracked. I looked all over the internet for tips on how to find it. Their map showed it going through my friends' farm in Lawson Missouri. But when? I could never find a way to track it, yet I saw internet postings of people photographing and filming the train along its' route. It is supposed to be on display on Saturday, 18, May from noon until 5pm.
Well, I found some postings on Facebook saying that it had already arrived a couple of days ago and was parked at Knoche yard just north of downtown K.C. on the south side of the yard. Then I read that it was on its' way from that yard into Union Station to get ready for the display.
So, I decided to head over to Union Station Friday evening to see if I could get a sneak peek and photograph it. It was a royal pain due to all sorts of detours due to road construction. I had no idea as to how to get into the parking lot. I did manage to travel along the north side of the station and could see that the locomotive had not yet arrived. Out of curiosity and desperation, I decide to go to Knoche yard in an attempt to photograph it there.
Guess what? I could not find it anywhere in that yard. I was about to give up when I decided to try one last thing. That is to go across a highway into the old U.P. Neff yard which is just east of the CPKC Knoche yard. What do you know? Bingo! there she was in all her glory complete with her passenger consist and diesel locomotive painted in the new CPKC colour scheme. The diesel in tow for the reason of providing electricity and braking power for the passenger cars consist. It was so stupid! The U.P. always gives detailed information for their steam excursions. Why couldn't the C.P. Rail do the same? No wonder they make fun of Canadians on South Park.
It was really cool because there were only 3 other guys there (2 from New York and 1 from Pennsylvania). Talk about serious railfanning! The only downside being the suns position in the sky since it was going on 7pm, but I didn't care. I had a blast! I also had the added pleasure of no crowds to interfere with my picture taking. Enjoy!
