Convenience

What will such a setup be used for? The difference in information collected will be enormous.

I think camera sensors will go in the direction of cell phone sensors. Camera sensors could top out at M4/3, with lightning fast electronics and fantastic AI. Look what phones are doing with 12mp sensors the size of your finger nail on your pinkie...now.
It won't take 15 years, maybe 2-3.
