This morning I read a thought provoking post by Steve Perry on his web site that opened with, “ Warning - you might not like what I have to say.” I thought it would be amusing to throw a match in that gas can. What do you think on the topic Is Technology Killing Photography?

Direct answer: Click bait.

Par for the course with Perry and his ilk. Its their basic business model. We have plenty wannabees of that model right here on UHH. Just browse the thread titles to see that. So acoarst Perry is a darling guru to them.

You have already confessed to throwing a match into a gas can just to see what will happen. A big thank you for enhancing the sites advertiser ratings ! That topic is quite passe, a zombie "discussion", and therefor headed for about twenty pages here ;-)

Like it or not, he's right on the money. The photo's shown during his lecture were spectacular. Using my 1998 2MP Kodak DC 280 Zoom camera would have made those impossible I think. Using today's top of the line equipment made it possible, but in my hands not likely.

You have to be a dedicated, skilled photographer with really good equipment to get his results. The equipment makes it possible, the photographer makes it happen.

I do see AI as somewhat threatening. As to advances in camera tech I agree with him.

Although I haven't watched his video yet, I'm guess that he's not an enemy of technological progress. Would any of us like to go back to the days before auto-focus? Shooting with a limit of 36 exposures? Giving up being able to shoot many frames per second? As far as I'm concerned, the more technology, the better.

I like and agree with what he had to say. Artistic imagination and technique are far more important than the tool. The battle is always trying to develop better artistic skills. Learning technology is easyier.

I think the entire debate and the surrounding "concerns" are ridiculous. Back when film replaced glass plates, or more recently the dominance of digital imaging over film- did any of those changes kill photography? Much ado about nothing.

I find interesting that he created the video while in Africa. This must have been simmering in his mind for a while until he could not take it anymore and had a blow up...

I agree with him, simply because like everything else one needs to keep abreast of novelties and adapt. (I do not when it comes to car... I WANT MANUAL GEARS!!! - There is screamed it!)

Many folks are upset with AI for some reason. To me, AI is just advanced programming, used with post-processing it works wonders.

AI is stupid - For any use. Alarming so, considering how some folks use it with no supervision or control - Does is make people dumber then? If AI is used properly, it can be a wonderful tool in many domains.

Anyone actually paying attention realizes that it's all over for photography...as an income.

It's only going to get better...and better...and faster...and faster.

You may think you're John Henry...but the end of the line is in sight.

Same with videography btw...just a matter of when...not if.

Have to admit I do admire Steve's proficiency, both with the technology and his artistic ability, but at the end of the day he's running a business and yes, videos like this are really just part of the marketing strategy. 'ASB' - attention seeking behaviour.

As to the changes in photographic capture and the assistance of technology to increase the keeper rate? It is what it is. The world is what it is and changing every day.
We just have to adapt or follow the path of the dinosaurs.
The next generation won't even think about what 'our' early days were about. They will have their own version where 2024 technology will be just the way it used to be done.

In ten years...no one young will be buying cameras.

If anyone asked me today if they should look into photography and videography as a career...I'd do them the honor of telling them the truth...look elsewhere...do something else.

If I'm still around in 2034, I bet I'll be reading camera reviews and wondering if I should buy this one or that one.
