Nikon is having a D850 Sale.
Thought I would post since there was a lot of discussion when someone wanted to buy one.

Is it better than the Z 7 ii which is $200 less?

That's probably more subjective than objective. I' looked prerty hard at the Z7 and Z7ii. I'd still get the D850 woth that price difference.

For Wildlife & sports, YES. Better AF. & no EVF lag.

I have owned both a D850 and a Z7II. It depends on what you use your camera for with your photos as to which is better. Overall, the D850 is the better camera. However, if shooting landscapes, the Z7II is smaller, lighter to carry and better in low light. The D850 is better for sports and anything that needs fast focusing and is the better overall camera.

The main difference between the 2 is what lenses will you ultimately use? The lenses made for the Z system are better than the old F lenses. If you're going to stick with the F lenses stay with the D850.

If you intend on upgrading your lenses, then the Z system is the way to go. Also, once you get used to it, I much prefer viewfinder in the Z systems over the F systems. The blackout is a bit of a pain but you get used to it and it's not bad on the Z8, which really is the match for the D850. The Z7II really isn't the match for the D850, but the Z8 is for sure.

If you're in it for the long haul and really use your camera than IMHO, the Z system is the way to go over a new D850. That is unless you plan to stay with all your F mount glass. Then stay with the D850. The D850 is an outstanding camera, but the Z system lenses take the Z7II or Z8 to a higher level. I have owned the D850, Z7II and Z8. I use the Z8 99% of the time now. The focus system between the Z8 and the Z7II is night and day. The Z8 is a huge upgrade as far as a fast-focusing camera system. The D850 focus system is closer to the Z8 than the Z7II. It really depends on what you shoot and what lenses you will use is where your choice should land.

What is missing? Statistically speaking, the Z9 and d850 are a virtual tie in various tests. Yes, mirrorless cameras weigh less and are the future. The Z10 (made up number) I am sure will blow the d850 out of the water. Also the d850 will go out of production if it has not already. A new d850 is down from $3k to $2.2k, but that is not what is missing. My camera equipment, receipt driven, is insured just south of $25k with Allstate. The majority of the cost is lenses, FX lenses to be specific. Yes, I could buy a Z and a converter coming close to matching the weight of a d850 with lens. Unless some fantastic lens trade-in program occurs, the yen to dollar drops to historic lows (that actually has occurred) and a tornado wipes out my cameras (only scenario that Allstate would buy if it all went away), I have to maintain the course.

By the way, as mentioned prior, just bought a second d850 from a photographer\camera I know very well for $200 above his trade-in price offer.

I love my D850 and I'm too poor to start switching over now.

Marginally better AF and no discernible EVF lag on the Z7II. Plus the Z7II has all the advantages of mirrorless. I know which way I’d go. But I haven’t used DSLRosaur since I sold my D500 a few years ago.

I have a D850 and a Z9. I tend to use the D850 because the Z9 does not have Focus lock. Not sure what bonehead decided it was not necessary when you are bouncing around in the back seat of a Nanchang.
