I have owned the L version for many years. I take it on hikes to the high country (above timberline) in the summer for wildflowers. I shoot handheld, so the IS is a big benefit. Owners of this lens generally come to love it for the beautiful renderings and versatility. I found that besides being a macro, it takes beautiful landscapes and portraits.
Use google to find old reviews and comparos. If you buy one, I'd recommend used. Canon raised the price quite a bit when the RF version was released making used the way to go.
