Just saw an add on-line. B&H wants $300 more for a D500 than for a D850!

Im sure most folks know the number one rule of pricing, but its worth mentioning that rules number two and three are exactly the same !

I haven't seen the ad, but I do look for D500s. My recent experience is that nice ones are quite hard to find...most are pretty well used up. "Rode hard and put up wet" would be a lot of Texan's assessments of them. The last one I bought was from a local camera store. It looks and performs like brand new and came with a like-new Nikon MBD-17 grip for $1100. The one before that was from an individual. Price was $600, but it required $360 in repair at Nikon to be made right. Bent front plate and other problems, all nondisclosed.

Most D850s I've looked at were in pretty nice shape. But I suspect that there are just too many of them on the market and in the back rooms...traded for Z8s.

I have and use both cameras, but suspect that a lot of the folks in the market for a used camera just find the D500 a better choice. They likely already have a selection of DX lenses and find 21 MP a more reasonable choice that 45 MP.

I didn't follow the ad to the source, but it was from B&H. I'm just assuming, from the prices quoted that they are both new.
I have and use both cameras also, and love both of them. But can't imagine anyone shooting both cameras for a week, deciding that 21 MP is a more reasonable choice than 45 MP! The D500 is more comfortable to shoot than the D850, in my opinion, but the extra 24(!!) MP advantage is too good to pass up, again in my opinion!
Having said that, the D500 has it's place, and I use it often!

It's a Grey Market D500 with a short zoom package!
Am I the only one surprised at this?

My preference for the D500 is based on the higher fps.

Both models are now priced for clearance so prices no longer reflect manufacturing cost plus profit margin. Clearance pricing mainly supply and demand.

On the above basis, if overstock remainiing supply is equal for both models, then its the greater demand that boosts the D500 price. IOW most buyers disagree with you.

But, OTOH, if remaining D850 inventory is much more overstocked than the D500, it could be oversupply that depresses the 850 price even though most buyers may agree with you about the price of pixels.

We dont have access to the data so we can just scratch our heads about pricing.

Which short zoom? You didn't tell us that.

Thanks Linda. I was working today and only had snippets of time available.

Cool. This is an $1100 lens which I have found used for usually $600-$700. They are not plentiful. For a long time, I didn't think it was a very good lens, but got one at a very attractive price and after a trip to Nikon for some serious repairs learned it was significantly better than the one I had tried out a few years ago. I use the combination pretty extensively.

I still don't think it is a good value for $1100, but for $500-$600 it changes the complexion of any comparison pretty significantly.

That deal is still too rich for me, but if a person really wants a new D500 and lens badly enough, it might be the only way to go.

I guess the test will be whether B&H gets their price for it.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind having a second one in good shape/Low shutter count. But that's a little rich for my blood too. Especially as a Gray Market copy!

Come on, folks. This ad plainly states that this is a gray market item. You would have to want a D500 badly to take the risk that Nikon US would never repair it.

You don't read for detail do you. The D500 includes the very nice, very sharp 16-80 lens at 2496, you cannot just buy the camera without a lens. The D850 is priced at 2196 for just the camera.
